T.H. Muller Galleri, a new art space located in Detroit’s East Riverfront district near Stroh River Place, will open its doors to the public for the first time on Sept. 24 with the North American premier of Swedish artist Thomas Muller.

T.H. Muller Galleri (Swedish for gallery), the exclusive North American art distributor for Muller, operates out of a space in a two-story, 22,000-square-foot structure, located at 2987 Franklin St. (also home to Detroit Denim Co.), which was built in 1905. Since 1911, the building was occupied by Dongan Electric Manufacturing Co., which has since moved to Fraser.

“When I first saw Thomas’ work, I was blown away, and I knew he should do a premiere in America, which he has never visited,” says Hans Hanson, president of CAM, an importer of specialty foods including Falksalt, and owner of the building and art gallery. “To see him capture such a unique perspective of Detroit without ever being here makes his art all the more impressive.”

Beginning his career as a decorative painter and a wall painter, Muller studied art in Norway’s capital, Oslo, then spent three years designing in the country before he moved to Stockholm for a decade. He now lives and works in Halmstad, Sweden.

Along with his artistic work, he also designs restaurants, nightclubs, and offices — with an aesthetic that includes a personal and industrial style.

The premier event for Muller’s work will begin at 5 p.m. on Sept. 23 with an invite-only VIP event, followed by a public showing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 24.

CAM, which has 16 employees, works with such brands as Neiman Marcus, Colavita, Rachael Ray, Spotlight Brands, Foodworks, Brand Aromatics, Jack’s Quality Beans, and Dal Raccolto. In addition to accommodating businesses, Hanson is adding several luxury residential lofts to the building.
